The Seattle Monorail

The Monorail was built as a demonstration project for mass transit for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. Today, the monorail provides easy access to and from the heart of the city and the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel (Link Light Rail) as it runs for 0.9 miles to Seattle Center. Seattle Center is home to more than 30 sports, cultural, entertainment, and recreational facilities including: 

Together with a broad range of public and community programs, thousands of events are held on the 74-acre campus and attract over 12 million visitors each year. 

A Long 2-Minute Trip

The Monorail is located in the heart of Washington’s most populous county – King County. Beginning at Westlake Retail Center and Transit hub in Downtown Seattle, the train runs northwesterly above 5th Avenue for ten blocks through Belltown, which is a hip area of high-rise condos, galleries, trendy shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. Turning sharply north at Denny Way, the Monorail continues above 5th Avenue, North for two blocks in the shadow of the Space Needle, along the eastern edge of Seattle Center. At Thomas Street, the Monorail turns sharply west, enters the Seattle Center grounds, and runs through a portal in the Experience Music Project (EMP). Immediately after passing through the EMP, the Monorail ends at the Seattle Center.

Westlake Station Digital Displays

More than 10 million local commuters each year connect at Westlake Retail Center via light rail, monorail, bus, and streetcar, making it the transportation hub for downtown Seattle. The Seattle Center Monorail station maintains its original open-air design with three elevated platforms and two entrances. Monorail ridership is now high all year round with the completion of Climate Pledge Arena which hosts concerts and events all year round as well as home games for the Seattle Kraken during NHL hockey season (September – June). Tourist season, summer and fall, bring annual events in the parks such as the Bumbershoot concert and the Bite of Seattle, and tourists continuously visit major attractions such as the Space Needle, Pacific Science Museum, Chihuly Garden and Glass, and the Experience Music Project Museum that all surround the Seattle Center Station. Major crowds and minimal parking options make riding the Monorail to events and attractions a logical and easy option.
